A drain that smells is trying to tell you something. Sometimes it’s a trap that has dried out, and the fix is as simple as running some water through. More often it’s a partial blockage or a break in the pipe letting air out where it shouldn’t. We track down drain smells across the Costa del Sol, and we’ll tell you honestly what’s causing yours rather than just covering it up.

We diagnose from the photos or video you send before anyone travels, so you get an honest read on the cause rather than a guess. Greg is a plumbing and heating engineer with 15 years behind him, and he works out of Calahonda, covering the coast from San Pedro de Alcántara to Benalmádena.

Why does a drain smell?

In a lot of cases the smell is sewer air getting into the room rather than water leaking out of the pipe. Each fitting has a trap under it: a bend that holds a plug of water to stop smells coming back up. When that water evaporates, the seal breaks and the smell gets through. A trap can also fail for other reasons, which is something we check on site rather than assume. A build-up of hair and soap in the trap does it too, and so does a pipe that has started to crack and let the air out at the wrong point.

Where is the smell coming from?

A smell that comes and goes is often a dried trap. A smell that hangs around, or gets stronger when you run water, points to a blockage or a cracked pipe. Tell us when you notice it, which room it’s in, and whether any of the drains are slow, and we’ll get closer to the cause. Some smells need a proper look on site to pin down, and we’ll say so rather than guess.

Is it a smell or a blockage?

The two usually travel together. A partial blockage holds standing water and organic build-up that smells, and it slows the drain at the same time. If the drain is backing up as well as smelling, that’s a job for our blocked drain clearing page. If the pipe is cracked and letting air out, see drain pipe repair instead.

What should I do while I wait?

Run some water through any drains that don’t get used much, like a guest shower or a second bathroom. If a trap has dried out, that alone can clear it. Don’t pour chemicals in to mask the smell: they won’t fix a break or a build-up, and they can make it harder to trace. Send us a photo or short video on WhatsApp, and we’ll tell you the next step.

How do you fix a drain smell?

We find the cause rather than cover it up. A dried trap is a simple matter of running water through and checking the seal holds. A blocked trap gets cleared mechanically, with drain rods or a pressure pump rather than chemicals, and a cracked pipe gets repaired properly. Before we travel, we’ll have looked at your photos or video and picked up anything we need from the supplier, so we turn up prepared to do the job rather than just to look at it.

Why a smell can come and go

A smell that comes and goes can have a few causes, and the timing is often the clue that points us to the right one. Note when it’s at its worst: in the morning, after a shower, or only when the weather turns. That pattern, plus a short video of the fitting, is exactly the kind of detail that helps us trace it, and some cases need a proper look on site to pin down.

What gives you confidence in our work?

We trace the cause and address it rather than masking it. A dried trap is confirmed and sealed, a blocked trap is cleared mechanically, and a cracked pipe is repaired properly, so we deal with the source of the smell rather than covering it over. Our work carries a one-year warranty, and we’re rated 5.0 stars from 26 Google reviews.

What does it cost to fix a drain smell?

The cost depends on the cause, which is why we ask for a photo or video first. We’ll agree the price with you before we go ahead. For the full rundown of what we charge, see our pricing page.
