How do you clear a blocked kitchen sink?

We start with the least invasive fix and only go further if we need to. A plunger or a suction pump can clear many traps. If the blockage is further down, we move to drain rods or a pressure pump, and for stubborn buildup we use a mechanical drain cleaner rather than pouring chemicals down the pipe. We finish with a hot-water flush and check the water is running freely before we pack up. Where the pipe is badly scaled, we’ll tell you rather than forcing it and risking a crack.

Is it your sink, or the main drain?

A kitchen sink that backs up on its own is usually the trap or the run of pipe under the sink. If the water also rises when the washing machine empties, or the bathroom is slow too, the problem is more likely further down, in which case it’s a job for our blocked drain service. What blocks a kitchen sink?

Fat and oil are the usual culprits. They pour down as liquid and set solid inside the pipe, then catch food scraps and build up until the water backs up. Coffee grounds and rice don’t help either, and neither does washing a lot of grease down a sink that’s already slow. Fat and oil can contribute to blockages, so wipe pans with kitchen paper before washing and scrape plates into the bin rather than the drain. A sink that drains slowly is the early warning: clearing it then is a smaller job than waiting for a full blockage.

When should you stop and call?

If the sink won’t drain at all, if water is backing up into the bowl when the dishwasher runs, or if you’ve already tried a plunger and it’s come straight back, stop and message us. A blocked drain that’s left too long can turn a small job into a bigger one, and a quick look at a video is enough to tell you whether it’s a simple clear or something more.
