Shower Drain Repair on the Costa del Sol

A shower that fills around your ankles while you wash, or a tray that takes an age to empty afterwards, is usually one of two things: a blockage in the trap or the pipe below it, or a drain that was put in wrong and has never run properly. We sort both across the Costa del Sol, and we’ll tell you straight which one you’re looking at.

Why won’t my shower drain?

The usual culprit is hair and soap. They catch on the trap and the first run of pipe, and over time they form a mat that slows the water to a trickle. Scale adds to it in hard-water areas, and the Costa del Sol has plenty of that. Is it the trap or the pipe?

If the shower backs up on its own, it’s usually the trap or the pipe directly beneath the tray, and that’s the quicker fix of the two. If the bath and basin are slow too, or the water rises when the washing machine empties, the problem is further down, and that’s a job for our blocked drain clearing rather than the shower alone. A quick message with a photo or short video is enough for us to tell the two apart before anyone travels.

What should I do while I wait?

Stop running water into the tray, and lift out what you can from the trap if the cover comes off easily. Don’t tip more drain cleaner down it: if the pipe is partly blocked, the cleaner just sits there, and you want the tray empty enough for us to see what’s going on. How do you fix a shower drain?

We clear the trap and the pipe mechanically rather than with chemicals, using a plunger, drain rods or a pressure pump depending on what we find, then finish with a hot-water flush to check the water runs away freely. The wet vac rides in the van if the job needs it. If the drain is damaged or was fitted badly in the first place, we’ll repair or refit it properly. We pick up the parts we need at the supplier before we travel, so we turn up prepared to do the job rather than just to look at it.

How do you stop it coming back?

Hair is the enemy, and a simple hair catcher over the plug can help catch it before it enters the drain. If the tray has started to drain slowly, it’s worth getting it looked at early rather than waiting for it to block completely. Scale and soap scum build up too, so a periodic rinse with hot water helps keep the run clear. We’ll tell you what we find and pass on anything worth doing differently while we’re there.

A shower tray that holds water is more than an annoyance: it can make the shower difficult to use, and the cause may persist until it is addressed. A drain that has been bodged to run uphill, or fitted with the wrong fall, will keep backing up until the pipe is corrected, which is why we look at how it was put in rather than what’s blocking it now.
